Feijoa sellowiana
Feijoa sellowiana
Feijoa sellowiana, commonly known as feijoa or pineapple guava, is an evergreen shrub or small tree that belongs to the Myrtaceae family and is native to South America.
Description
This shrub typically grows to a height of 1.5 to 4.5 meters (5 to 15 feet) and has a dense, rounded habit. The leaves of Feijoa sellowiana are leathery, elliptical to lance-shaped, and gray-green in colour. They have a silvery underside, which adds to their visual appeal. The leaves are evergreen, providing year-round interest in the garden. In spring or early summer, feijoa produces showy, red or pink flowers with prominent, bright red stamens.
The shrub is generally pest-resistant and has good tolerance to salt spray, making it suitable for coastal gardens.
Feijoa sellowiana is popular for its edible fruits, but it is also valued for its attractive foliage, showy flowers, and versatility in garden designs. It can be utilized as a specimen plant, in hedges or screens, or as an ornamental addition to mixed borders.
